It is made in premium Nida Matte fabric, the soft matte weave we use across the collection. Nida Matte is opaque, light on the skin, drapes straight without clinging and barely creases through a full day out. On a two piece set that matters twice over, because both layers have to fall cleanly without adding weight.
Why A Butterfly Kaftan Instead Of A Plain Kids Abaya
A butterfly abaya or a cape abaya for kids, also sold as a batwing abaya, takes its shape from a wide sweep of fabric under the arm rather than a fitted sleeve. On the Asmara that sweep is cut into a half kaftan cape, so it flares when she lifts her arms and settles flat when she does not. Because the cape is a separate piece over a plain skirt, nothing pulls at the shoulders and there is no zip or button fighting her while she gets dressed.
The loose fit is the practical part. A one piece abaya has to be sized to her chest and her height at the same time. A cape and skirt set only has to clear her chest, so it keeps fitting as she grows, and the skirt works on its own under a school kurta.

Do not go by her regular clothing size. Measure around the fullest part of her chest with a soft tape and match that number to the chart below. Length only needs to reach the ankle. These are final garment measurements and already include wearing room.

Buying a kids kaftan abaya for a 6 year old girl or a 5 year old, take the 5-6 Years size: 26 inch chest and 38 inch length. For a 7 or 8 year old, the 7-8 Years size at 28 inch chest and 40 inch length. An abaya for a 10 year old girl is the 9-10 Years size, 30 inch chest and 42 inch length, and this is the size parents order most often. For an 11 or 12 year old girl take 11-12 Years at 32 inch chest and 44 inch length, and for a 13 or 14 year old the 13-14 Years size at 34 inch chest and 46 inch length.

How To Style It
Pair the cape with a hijab in a matching or contrasting shade and simple flats or sandals. The butterfly sleeves do the work, so keep everything else plain. For a plainer school look, wear the skirt on its own with a simple top and save the cape for occasions.
Care Instructions
- Hand wash in cold water with a mild detergent; wash dark and bright shades separately for the first two or three washes
- Do not bleach and do not dry clean
- Do not wring. Press the water out gently and hang to dry in shade
- Iron on medium heat or steam, inside out
- Wash the cape and the skirt together so both pieces hold exactly the same shade
- Hang on a wide hanger rather than folding, so the fall of the fabric is not creased

What is a butterfly abaya dress?

What age should girls start wearing an abaya?
There is no fixed rule. Most parents in India start somewhere between five and seven, usually for madrasa, Eid and family functions before daily wear. This set begins at the 5-6 Years size.
