Description
Yumna Kids Abaya for Girls: A Clean, Practical Front Zip A-Line Abaya She Can Wear On Her Own
Most abayas made for children make dressing a whole production. The Yumna is a front zip kids abaya built the opposite way: a zip running from chest to waist means she can get in and out of it herself, no pulling over the head, no buttons to fumble with. Two vertical piping lines run down the front for a neat, tailored finish. Cut in five age-based sizes for girls from 5 to 14 years.
It is made in premium Nida fabric, the soft matte weave we use across our collection. Nida is opaque, light on the skin, drapes straight without clinging and barely creases through a full day out. For a child that matters twice over: it survives being sat in, played in and washed often.
Why A Front Zip Abaya Instead Of A Pull-Over One
A pull-over abaya has to go over her head, which means a parent doing it for her before school, before madrasa and again before prayer. A zip abaya for girls solves that in one detail. The Yumna’s zip sits at the front from chest to waist, so a five year old can manage it and a ten year old never needs asking. It also means the neckline is not stretched out of shape over a year of being tugged on and off, which is what usually kills a kids abaya first.
The A-line cut does the rest. It falls loose from the chest down with no belt and no gathering, so it never pulls when she sits, runs or climbs, and the piping down the front keeps a plain abaya from looking plain.

Which Size For Her Age? Sizing From 5 To 14 Years
Don’t go by her regular clothing size – measure around the fullest part of her chest with a soft tape, and match that number to the chart below. Length only needs to reach the ankle. These are final garment measurements and already include wearing room.
| Size | Age | Chest (in) | Length (in) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5-6 Years | 5 and 6 year olds | 26 | 38 |
| 7-8 Years | 7 and 8 year olds | 28 | 40 |
| 9-10 Years | 9 and 10 year olds | 30 | 42 |
| 11-12 Years | 11 and 12 year olds | 32 | 44 |
| 13-14 Years | 13 and 14 year olds | 34 | 46 |
Buying an abaya for a 6 year old girl or a 5 year old, take the 5-6 Years size: 26 inch chest and 38 inch length. An abaya for an 8 year old girl is the 7-8 Years size, 28 inch chest and 40 inch length, and a 7 year old takes the same one. For a 9 or 10 year old, the 9-10 Years size at 30 inch chest and 42 inch length. An abaya for a 12 year old girl is the 11-12 Years size, 32 inch chest and 44 inch length, and for a 13 or 14 year old take 13-14 Years at 34 inch chest and 46 inch length.
If her chest falls between two sizes, take the larger one. A kids abaya is meant to hang loose, and the extra room buys you another season of wear. Girls above 14 or outside the chart are covered by our made-to-order sizing further down this page, and the full burqa and abaya size chart lists every band we stitch.
19 Colours, Now Including Khaki
A black abaya for girls is still the most requested shade because it goes with every hijab and hides a school day, and maroon is the one that sells out around Eid. Khaki is the newest addition and the one to pick if you want something that is neither black nor pastel: it reads as a neutral, hides marks as well as a dark shade, and the contrast piping shows up on it far better than it does on black.
The Yumna comes in beige, black, bottle green, coffee brown, French blue, grey, grey olive, jade green, khaki, maroon, mustard, navy blue, olive green, puce pink, silver, teal green, violet, white and wine.
Deep shades such as black, navy blue, wine and bottle green are the practical everyday picks. Lighter shades like beige, silver, white and puce pink photograph beautifully for Eid and family functions but need a little more care in the wash.
How To Style It
Pair it with a hijab in a matching or contrasting shade and simple flats or sandals. The piping already gives the front a line, so keep the rest plain and let the zip sit closed to the top for the neatest look.
Care Instructions
- Hand wash in cold water with a mild detergent; wash dark and bright shades separately for the first two or three washes
- Do not bleach and do not dry clean
- Do not wring. Press the water out gently and hang to dry in shade, since direct sun fades maroon, wine and navy blue
- Iron on medium heat or steam, inside out
- Hang on a wide hanger rather than folding
Ideal For
School, madrasa, everyday wear, family gatherings, Eid, and daily prayer wear. The zip makes it the easiest one in her cupboard for wudu and prayer time, which is why parents usually order two of this style rather than one.

Questions Parents Ask Before Ordering
What age is this abaya for?
Girls from 5 to 14 years, in five two-year age bands cut loose for growing room. Sizes outside that range are made to order.
Which size should I order for an 8 year old?
The 7-8 Years size, 28 inch chest and 40 inch length. If she is broader or taller than average for her age, go up to 9-10 Years.
Can she put it on herself?
Yes, that is the point of this style. The zip runs from the chest to the waist at the front, so there is nothing to pull over her head and nothing to reach behind her back.
Is the zip safe and comfortable for a child?
It sits flat under the piping with fabric behind it, so it does not press against the chest, and it stops at the waist rather than running the full length of the abaya.
Is it a burqa or an abaya?
The same garment. Abaya is the common term in the Gulf, burqa in South Asia, and both describe this full-length outer dress.
Is this suitable for daily school wear?
Yes. Nida barely creases and washes easily, so a dark or khaki shade works for daily school and madrasa wear as well as for occasions.
More From Our Kids Range
This is one style from our full kids abaya collection, where you can compare every abaya for girls we make side by side. If she would rather have something with more flare for Eid, look at the Amira tiered frill abaya, and for the plainest everyday option see the Rimayah kids burqa or the Areesha front open kids abaya. Prefer this straight, uncluttered cut in an adult size? The whole A-line abaya range is built on the same silhouette.
